Pipeline Oncology General Manager: Job

Department Function/Objective
- Senior executive who will lead global
Oncology commercial team for key pipeline
launches.
- Must demonstrate ability to influence
and manage a complex set of internal
and external stakeholders.
- Must be able to lead a multidisciplinary
team and drive commercial decisions in
a highly complex matrix organization
to accomplish business goals
- Capable of attracting and developing
Oncology commercial talent
- Also must have demonstrated ability
to motivate and lead team and have the
managerial courage to make and stand
by difficult decisions.
Primary Job Function
Responsible for comprehensive commercial
strategy for Oncology and leading global
team for launch compounds (currently in
Ph2/3 trials). Build visibility of the
pipeline and develop strategies to expand
the product portfolio through licensing
or partnering activities.
Responsibilities include:
- Establish a strategic vision for Oncology
through proactively influencing external
and internal stakeholders towards realization
of the Oncology pipeline
- Implement a plan to maximize top and
bottom line results for the Oncology
business; includes Global Marketing,
Life Cycle Management, Scientific Awareness,
Market Development and Health Outcomes.
- Build current and future competitive
advantage by understanding and addressing
key customer’s needs; demonstrate
deep understanding of competitors’
strategies; address gaps in Abbott’s
pipeline
- Balance business priorities and resources,
adapting to the external and internal
environment
- Influence and lead decision-making
with R&D, health outcomes, licensing,
manufacturing, finance and other internal
stakeholders
Critical near-term objectives include:
- Effectively manage internal relationships
with US and ex-US commercial counterparts,
R&D, Health Outcomes/Market Access,
Licensing
- Sharply focus the organization on
planning and executing pre-launch activities
(for compounds in Ph2b or Ph3).
- Advise R&D on data required to
support positioning, publication strategies
and to build scientific share of voice
- Broaden the network in Oncology by
building scientific, academic, KOL, payer
and patient advocacy relationships
- Ensure timely advice to PPG senior
management regarding the Oncology strategy
and key brands; drive licensing strategies,
lead Oncology LRP forecasts, Portfolio
planning and annual financial plan
- Position requires excellent communication
skills and strong analytical skills to
understand scientific and financial data,
recognize key issues, establish PPG priorities,
and prepare high level presentations
for senior executive staff review.
Supervisory/Management Responsibilities
This position will lead cross-functional
teams consisting of US and ex-US Commercial,
Business Development, R&D, Health Outcomes
(Market Access and HEOR). Other functions
may be included based on divisional needs.
Position Accountability / Scope
This position reports to DVP, Global Pipeline
Marketing and drives global decisions for
the Oncology pipeline; each compound projected
to be >$1B in peak sales. Drives pipeline
strategy and commercial decision-making
through early Phase 3 and will transition
the brand to Commercial franchises approximately
18 months prior to launch.
Skills/Experience Requirements
The successful candidate will have a
demonstrated track record with general
management in pharmaceuticals and full
P&L responsibility. The executive should
have 10+ years experience in the pharmaceutical
industry, minimum 3-5 years oncology experience
and 3+ years in marketing or new product
planning. As a key strategic link between
scientists and business leaders, this executive
must have analytical and extrapolative
thinking and influencing skills. Strong
communication and negotiating skills required.
Specifically, this executive must have
broad, in-depth understanding of the division’s
scientific (R&D), commercial, legal
and manufacturing operations. Must be able
to identify and address key issues quickly.
Education Requirements
Science degree (MD, RN, PharmD, PhD)
and MBA strongly preferred.
